Builders Merchants Journal: Start with the front door

As the UK vaccine roll-out proceeds, and the UK gradually returns to some kind of 'normal', it seems likely that everyone will be far more cautious about human contact, and more aware of the need to limit the spread of infection, as BMJ finds out.

The need for better hand hygiene won't dissipate as the Covid-19 pandemic recedes. Instead, builders merchants' customers will be looking for new products and solutions to help prevent the spread of disease in schools, offices, gyms, hotels and more.

That's according to Colin Campbell, managing director at ironmongery specialist Codelocks. "One way builders' merchants can meet this need, is to offer a range of modern access control solutions," he says. "Even in large buildings, with plenty of space for social distancing, doorways can create bottlenecks - so access control solutions are an obvious place to start. The many different options currently available offer a range of advantages over the old-fashioned lock and key - and each has its own unique benefit."

An RFID, or card-operated door controller, for example, is a simple and convenient way to provide contactless access to any premises. Similarly, card operated locker locks offer convenient and hygienic access to lockers for schools, gyms and hospitals, even workplaces.

"As we return to the workplace, many employees will need to operate in shifts to allow for social distancing," Campbell says. "Others will want to continue the flexible hours they have adopted at home. Code operated locks, ranging from simple mechanical models to feature-rich electronic designs, can help facilitate this need for charge by allowing personnel to access premises at any time of day or night, without the necessity for a keyholder to be on hand"

Smart locks, combining innovative technology with traditional access control features, give even greater convenience and control, Campbell continues. A business owner can generate a single-use, time sensitive code, for example, and send it to an end user such as a delivery driver - removing the need for face-to-face contact.

As smart locks can be audited, they also enable organisations to check who has accessed a given area at any time - helping to monitor social distancing. He also points out that coded locks and smart access solutions can only go so far in helping to reduce physical contact. "That's why we have a new coating available for our products that protects against viral transmission and reduces bacterial growth by over 99.9%*. Clean by Codelocks reacts with light and converts harmful bacteria and germs into a non-toxic compound, leaving a dean and hygienic surface.

"We have been supplying convenient and secure access solutions to Builders Merchants for nearly thirty years and we continue to meet the industry's changing needs. Our new nano-tech finish has been proven to eliminate the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (COVID-19) surfaces within minutes - and its now available across our entire range."

As we adapt to the post-pandemic world, customers will be increasingly looking for products that help them adapt to the new normal and help with. Keyless access solutions combined with an an anti-bacterial finish will be a real market dfferentiator - making such products a smart addition to any builders' merchants' catalogue.
